The innovative work of Haywards Property Services, the property management and building consultancy arm of The Erinaceous Group, has been boosted by the intervention of Suffolk County Council on a prestigious building project in Ipswich.

One of the most environment friendly buildings of its size ever designed for the UK, which was designed to house the new headquarters of TXU Energi before the company was bought. Suffolk County Council then decided to use the building for a new county hall and reappointed Haywards Property Services as mechanical and electrical consultants to complete the project.

The building forms the centrepiece of the Ipswich Village redevelopment area and is made up of three office blocks linked with an atrium. Inside there is some innovative mechanical and electrical services designed by Haywards Property Services.

David Watson, of Haywards Property Services, commented: “The exterior glazing incorporates photovoltaic cells that convert solar energy into some 200 kilowatts of free electricity, which is the largest installation of its kind in the UK. The building's air conditioning has a ‘green’ heart which harnesses the heat rejected in those areas that need cooling, and transfers it to those that need heating – again this has not been done on this scale in the UK.

“We even designed ecological lavatories – thanks to a bespoke system designed by our engineers all the water used for flushing is rainwater collected from the roof, stored and pumped around to the toilets.”
